The crisis hovering over the chair of Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray seems to be over. The Election Commission has decided to hold the Legislative Council elections in the state. Notification has been issued by the Commission. According to this, there will now be elections on 9 seats of the state on May 21.
In fact, Governor Bhagat Singh Koshiyari had requested the Election Commission to hold elections to 9 vacant seats of Maharashtra Legislative Council at the earliest. The governor said that in view of the end of the current crisis in the state, elections should be announced on the seats of the Legislative Council, which have been vacant since April 24. Now the commission has announced to hold elections.
What did the Governor say :
Governor Bhagat Singh Koshiyari had said that the central government has announced several exemptions and measures amid lockdown in the country. In such a situation, elections to the Legislative Council can be held with some guidelines, after which Uddhav Thackeray has breathed a sigh of relief.
The Maharashtra government had twice passed a proposal from the cabinet to nominate Uddhav Thackeray as MLC. On this, Governor Bhagat Singh Koshiyari was silent for a long time, after which Uddhav called Prime Minister Narendra Modi and requested help, after which the political crisis in Maharashtra seems to be over.
Why Election is important :
Uddhav Thackeray was sworn in as the Chief Minister on 28 November 2019 and is not a member of any House of the Legislature at present. According to the constitution, he is required to become a member of a House by 6 May i.e. 27 May 2020 within 6 months of becoming CM. Uddhav Thackeray has directly become CM without contesting elections, in which case this rule applies to him.
