“We will not pass any order but the states should consider indirect sale/home delivery of liquor to maintain social distancing norms and standards”, Justice Ashok Bhushan, heading the bench said.
Supreme Court disposes off a petition seeking clarity on the sale of liquor and to ensure social distancing while it is being sold in liquor shops, during the lockdown.
While extending the lockdown decision, several states allowed the sale of liquor as per central government regulations. However, a petition was filed in the Supreme Court alleging lack of clarity in the liquor order. The petition was heard before a bench of Justice Ashok Bhushan today. The apex court dismissed the petition, refusing to issue any order. “All states should consider home delivery of liquor without any contact to comply with the rules of social distancing,” it said.
The Center decided to impose a lockdown to prevent the spread of Corona. The lockdown was then extended twice. After May 3, the Center relaxed the lockdown in some respects. As a result, many states allowed the opening of shops for essential and non-essential items. It also allowed the sale of alcohol. However, after this decision, there was chaos all over the country. The rush to buy alcohol posed a threat to Corona’s spread. A petition was filed in the Supreme Court saying there was no clarity in the order issued by the government in this regard.
There should be clarity in the order regarding sale of liquor. A three-judge bench headed by Justice Ashok Bhushan heard the petition seeking compliance with social distancing. This time, the court refused to issue any order. “We will not give any orders. However, in order for all the states to comply with the rules and directives of social distancing, indirect sales, ie home delivery, should be considered, ”the court directed the states.
Several states allowed the sale of alcohol after the third phase of the lockdown began. Some states changed their minds because of the confusion and crowds. Many states have resorted to the token system for the sale of liquor. Some have started home delivery method.
