BMC’s Warning to illegal hotels: Close now or lose Water and Power
The BMC has given clear warning to illegal hotels and has asked the registrar of companies to take action against such hotels and hotel Chainsaggregators OYO Hotels and Homes and FabHotels for tying up with such illegal hotels in the Mumbai city.
Neither do these hotels have civic trade, health and hygiene licences nor do they have no-objection certificates from the fire department. BMC had in past seized materials from these hotels three times over the past year, and has now intimidated them with a fourth notice— warning them that their water and electricity supplies will be disconnected— if they don’t shut shop now.
BMC had began an audit to identify illegal hotels, lodges and restaurants after the Hotel City Kinara fire in Kurla in October 2015. Hotel Kinara was later found to have violated several safety rules. The audit revealed that many hotels were running openly without trade licence mandated under Section 394 of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act, and were not fire compliant either. People look at the brand names as they are listed and endorsed by hotel aggregators such as OYO and Fab Hotels and make bookings at these hotels. “OYO and FabHotels must have a policy to check if their partner hotels have all clearances.A majority of these illegal hotels are operational in Kurla, Sakinaka, LBS Marg, Powai, Asalpha and Andheri East.
