Migrant workers come out on road; say want to travel back home
Daily wage workers have been rendered jobless ever since the lockdown was announced late last month to stem the spread of COVID-19, making their life a constant struggle. According to a police, daily wage earners, numbering around 1,000, assembled at suburban Bandra (West) bus depot near the railway station and squatted on road at around 3 pm.
Mumbai: Hundreds of migrant labourers gathered near Bandra Station on Wednesday after hearing a news about the government running trains to transport them back to their home states.
The crowd which had gathered for more than an hour led to fears of the spread of the covid19 epidemic especially as Bandra east is one of the affected zones where a number of cases have been found.
The crowd was finally dispersed after the police began lathi charging the crowds. The issue however led to a blame game between the main opposition party BJP and the Shiv Sena that runs the government. However the situation has been diffused after Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray.
Earlier as the crowds gathered Environment and Tourism Minister Aaditya Thackeray blamed the centre for the crowds saying, “ Right from the day the trains have been shut down, the State had requested trains to run for 24 hours more so that migrant labour could go back home. CM Uddhav Thackeray ji raised this issue in the PM- CM Video Conf as well requesting a roadmap for migrant labour to reach home.”
Maharashtra opposition leader Devendra Fadnavis however slammed the Sena for targeting the centre, claiming that the incident had occurred because the state government was not taking good care of the migrants. “ This is a serious situation that has occurred and it has happened because the migrants are not being provided proper food and accommodation. We have been repeatedly pointing this out to the state government. The state government is trying to escape their responsibiiity by blaming the centre, this is unfortunate,”tweeted Fadnavis.
